E poi, c’è la terra di Tom Bombadil. Gli hobbit riescono a sentire l’odio in tutti gli alberi della Vecchia Foresta. Ogni albero in quel luogo è un malevolo Huorn che ha in odio l’umanità. Ogni singolo albero. E i tumuli degli antichi re che giacciono lì vicino sono profanati e abitati dagli Esseri dei Tumuli. Bombadil ha il potere di controllare o bandire tutte queste creature, ma non lo fa. Al contrario, offre loro rifugio contro gli uomini e gli altri poteri. Cose malvagie – e solo cose malvagie – prosperano nel suo dominio. “Tom Bombadil è il Signore”, dice Baccadoro; e i suoi sudditi sono Huorn ed Esseri dei Tumuli. Cosa sappiamo di Tom Bombadil? Che non è la figura benevola che finge di essere. Tom compare al Portatore dell’Anello sotto un aspetto amichevole e felice, per interrogarlo e metterlo alla prova e consegnare a lui e ai suoi compagni delle spade capaci di uccidere i servi di un altro potere malvagio. Ma le sue ragioni le tiene per sé. Riflettete: viene detto più di una volta che i salici sono gli alberi più potenti e malvagi della Foresta. Ciò nonostante, la filastrocca che Bombadil insegna agli hobbit perché possano usarla per evocarlo include il verso «tra il salice e il giunchillo». I salici sono parte del potere di Bombadil e un mezzo per invocarlo; essi traggono la loro forza dal Circonvolvolo, il fiume maledetto che è il centro di tutto il male presente nella Foresta. E le sorgenti del Circonvolvolo sono giusto accanto alla casa di Tom Bombadil. E poi c’è Baccadoro, «la figlia del fiume». È presentata come la sposa di Bombadil, un essere improbabilmente bello e regale che incanta e ammalia gli hobbit. Viene lasciato intendere implicitamente che sia uno spirito d’acqua, e siede pettinando i lunghi, biondi capelli alla maniera di una sirena (e vale la pena di ricordare che le sirene erano in origine viste come dei mostri, belle sopra la superficie dell’acqua e viscide e orrende al di sotto, dedite ad attirare i marinai affinché annegassero per poi divorarli). Io suggerisco invece che il nome significhi che nel suo stato naturale Baccadoro è nutrita dal Fiume – vale a dire il proverbialmente malvagio Circonvolvolo. Nel folklore e nelle leggende (come Tolkien ben sapeva) vi sono molte storie di creature in grado di assumere forma umana, ma la cui forma finale contiene sempre un indizio della loro vera natura. Cosa potrebbe essere dunque Baccadoro? È alta e snella – specificamente, una «bacchetta esil di salice» – e indossa un abito verde. Siede tra ciotole d’acqua di fiume ed è circondata dalla cortina dei suoi capelli dorati. Io suggerisco che sia un albero di salice mutato in forma umana, uno Huorn malevolo come il Vecchio Uomo Salice dal quale gli hobbit sono appena fuggiti; se non addirittura quello stesso albero. E allora, se tutto questo è vero, perché Bombadil salva e soccorre il Portatore dell’Anello e i suoi compagni? Perché essi possono causare la caduta di Sauron, l’attuale Oscuro Signore della Terra di Mezzo. Alla caduta di Sauron gli altri anelli verranno meno, i maghi e gli elfi lasceranno la Terra di Mezzo, e l’unico grande potere rimasto sarà Tom Bombadil. C’è un confine attorno alla terra di Bombadil che egli non può o non vuole oltrepassare; qualcosa che lo confina in uno spazio ristretto. In cambio, nessun mago o elfo entra nel suo territorio per vedere chi lo governa o per disturbare le creature malvagie che si radunano sotto la sua protezione. Quando gli hobbit ritornano alla Contea dopo il loro viaggio a Mordor, Gandalf li lascia nei pressi di Bree e si dirige vero la terra di Bombadil per conferire con lui. Non sappiamo cosa si dicono. Tuttavia, Gandalf è stato inviato nella Terra di Mezzo per opporsi a Sauron e ora deve ripartire. Non gli è stata affidata alcuna missione riguardo all’affrontare Tom Bombadil, e presto dovrà lasciare la Terra di Mezzo a Uomini e Hobbit privi di potere, mentre Bombadil rimane, aspettando di raggiungere i propri scopi. Penso che Tolkien abbia pianificato le cose in questo modo? Niente affatto. Tuttavia, la trovo una speculazione interessante. Per speculare ulteriormente e in modo più sfrenato: L’incantesimo che vincola Tom Bombadil alla sua terra angusta e maledetta è stato scagliato secoli prima dai Valar per proteggere Uomini ed Elfi. Può durare ancora alcuni decenni, forse alcune generazioni di hobbit, ma quando l’ultimo Elfo avrà lasciato gli Approdi e gli ultimi incantesimi degli anelli e dei maghi avranno perso efficacia, il vincolo cadrà. Allora Iarwain Ben-Adar, il Più anziano e Senza Padre, che era il signore dell’oscurità nella Terra di Mezzo prima di Sauron, prima che Morgoth vi mettesse piede, prima del primo sorgere del sole, riavrà la sua eredità. E allora, in una notte oscura, i vecchi alberi marceranno verso ovest nella Contea per nutrire il loro antico odio. E mentre gli alberi mormoreranno le loro maledizioni e gli Esseri dei Tumuli, neri e terribili, danzeranno farfugliando attorno a lui, Bombadil, vestito infine della sua vera forma, danzerà fra loro cantando i suoi versi incomprensibili. E lo farà sorridendo.

Sono d'accordo su quasi tutto (anche perché tu per primo sei allineato con me su quasi tutto 😝) tranne che su questo. Una volta che hai tirato il dado, non hai più una "possibilità", hai un esito. Il dado ti dice se ciò che intendevi fare è riuscito oppure no (o qualche sfumatura in mezzo, se le regole lo prevedono). Poi indubbiamente sta al gruppo elaborare la risposta in azioni sceniche, ma la risposte è inequivocabile, non più probabilistica. Sì, in effetti qui l'ho fatta un po' semplice, in macchina si parla eccome dei danni e delle combo. Dopo dieci anni (o venti...) però, resta solo la storia... 🥹

Non saprei, i crossover in genere non mi convincono granché. Nel WoD ogni "specie" ha le sue meccaniche personali (e pure complicate) quindi credo che per il Narratore sarebbe un po' un casino gestire le varie forme dei licantropi, le varie frenesie dei vampiri o gli effetti del tormento dei demoni tutti insieme nella stessa avventura... bisognerebbe essere Narratori bravi ed avere le spalle tanto ma tanto larghe secondo me.

Io, abbastanza maniaco del controllo, ho una wiki della nostra ambientazione di gioco. C'è quello che interessa ai giocatori, e ci aggiungiamo quello che assieme valutiamo sia sensato. Si mantiene così una sorta di integrità narrativa.

@Ipergigio Tu che hai lanciato questa ricerca, prenderesti in considerazione l'eventualità di farne una Campagna Crossover, con qualche PG "Fallen Demon" (quindi un PG che sia "Namaru", "Annunaki", "Asharu", "Neberu", "Lammasu", "Rabisu" o "Halaku") come il Tuo ed altri che siano Vampiri Cainiti, MOLTO Anziani o "Mummie Egizie" (onestamente credo gli UNICI Abitanti del Mondo-Di-Tenebra Giocabili che siano comparabili come "Influenza Plurimillenaria" ai Caduti) o persino Werewolf Garous, Ancient Wraiths, Changelings Of Arcadia e Magi delle Tradizioni (sebbene ci sia qualche problema di "Gap Tra Personaggi" non tanto per il "Raw Power" ma per il fatto che sarebbero "Giovani Ragazzini Ignoranti" rispetto a Creature che hanno Memorie ANTECEDENTI alla Storia Umana; a meno di non avere investito MOLTO sui Meriti-Backgrounds di "Past Life" od escamotage tipo "Giocare Un Wraith Mesopotamico-Assiro-Babilonese uscito da MILLENNI di "Slumber" !!). . . Io non credo di avere NE il Tempo NE la Inclinazione di Giocare o Masterare una Campagna del Genere, ma so che qui sul Dragonforum qualche appassionato del VECCHIO Mondo-Di-Tenebra (e specialmente della Terza Edizione, la più compatibile con "Demon The Fallen") c'era ancora ed era interessato. . .!! Ma dei Demoni NON gli Interessava Giocarne e piuttosto pensavano a "Vampiri Veterani" od altee Creature Simili (tipo appunto le "Mummie CHe Si Reincarnano"). . .!!

Apro questo nuovo topic di Q&A separato e distinto per l'edizione 2024 di D&D 5E.

La prospettiva è leggermente diversa: come al solito, Gygax strumentalizzava le dichiarazioni che rilasciava per sminuire il lavoro altrui ed esaltare il suo "genio". Uno scrittore o un'opera può piacere o non piacere, ma quando se ne esce citando direttamente "balrog, ent, warg, hobbit" è difficile credere che quest'opera non abbia avuto un influenza profonda. L'astio di Gygax verso Tolkien ha ragioni molto meno "ideologiche o stilistiche" e ben più materiali: la causa intentata dalla Tolkien Estate che ha costretto la TSR ha rimuovere i nomi delle creature. Gygax sosteneva di essere lui l'inventore delle "piccole creature con i piedi pelosi chiamate hobbit", peccato che Tolkien avesse scritto lo Hobbit nel 1937, mentre Gygax nacque nel 1938... E' solo un banale esempio di alcune delle numerose affermazioni azzardate fatte dal buon Gary. Nessuno può togliere a Gygax il merito di aver creduto in un gioco all'epoca sconosciuto, di averlo in un certo modo codificato e diffuso. Ma i sui meriti sono decisamente inferiori a quelli che il mito gli riconosce.

Pienamente d'accordo. Da amante della storia del gioco di ruolo mi sono letto molti libri, specialmente sulla TSR. Sono partito considerando Gygax un mito, un genio, ma man mano che leggevo, la figura che è emersa è quella di un egoista narcisista, con alcune buone idee sue e molte di altri di cui si è appropriato. Un designer incapace di mettere per iscritto in modo chiaro le sue idee, un rapace pronto a prendersi meriti che non gli competono. Quando dice di non aver preso ispirazione da Tolkien mente sapendo di mentire. Voleva che l'opera fosse interamente attribuita al suo genio e alla sua creatività, rifiutando di ammettere di aver "preso in prestito" quasi tutto da altri scrittori, solo che alcuni li ha citati nella famosa Appendice N, su altri ha preferito soprassedere. Per non citare il tentativo di oscurare il contributo ESSENZIALE di Arneson nella nascita e nella crescita di D&D. Del resto, buona parte del fallimento della TSR è proprio imputabile al buon Gary e alla sua "grandeur" quando si trasferì a Los Angeles e spese milioni e milioni di dollari per perseguire il suo sogno cinematografico, rivelatosi un vero e proprio buco nell'acqua. Questo esempio solo per far capire l'ego spropositato di questo signore. (Se qualcuno vuole saperne di più, sarò ben felice di scrivere un articolo con tutti i riferimenti del caso).

Tenete presente che, se per una Campagna "Modulo Pre-Scritto" o già ben strutturata da un Dungeonmaster con una Narrativa Predefinita in Dettaglio "Far Inserire Dei PNG Improvvisati" potrebbe sparigliare le Carte in un Sistema "Rigido" come D&D, ci son altri Sistemi dove la cosa non solo è INCORAGGIATA (come tanti "Freeforms Narrativi") ma addirittura FONDAMENTALE (come in "Fabula Ultima" dove la Idea è che siano i Personaggi Giocanti a "Scrivere La Storia In Divenire" ed al GM spetta improvvisare con un "Canovaccio Di Base" come Traccia, cosa che non è facilissima per tutti i Gruppi o tutti i Players). . .!!

Demon the Fallen è revised del mondo di tenebra classico, quindi terza edizione. Che sono angeli caduti più classici. Demon the descent è seconda edizione del nuovo mondo di tenebra, quindi Chronicles of darkness. Che sono gli angeli caduti tecnognostici.

io ci vedo un contrasto interessante . Gygax voleva sviluppare qualcosa di suo , cercando di evitare certi gemellaggi , ma alcuni erano inevitabili .

Devo ammettere che, da questo punto di vista, capisco benissimo l'atteggiamento di Gygax... come ho detto in più occasioni, il "Silmarillion" è l'unico libro che ho avuto difficoltà a leggere (prima di riuscirlo a finire l'ho preso e lasciato un sacco di volte, per quanto l'ho trovato pesante e noioso, nonostante da ragazzino avessi letto la Bibbia da cima a fondo più di una volta!), anche il "Signore degli Anelli" mi è sembrato pesante (preferisco i film di Jackson, e ancora di più il cartone di Bakshy), e persino lo "Hobbit" non mi ha intrigato più di tanto... la mia opinione è che l'opera di Tolkien sia enormemente sopravvalutata! Se Gygax la pensava più o meno allo stesso modo, quindi, non mi sorprende che si potesse adombrare, all'idea che la gente potesse ritenere che il successo di D&D dipendesse molto (o soprattutto) da quello delle opere di Tolkien. C'è da dire che, da questo punto di vista, molta della colpa era dello stesso Gygax, che avrebbe potuto evitare di scopiazzare spudoratamente alcune delle "trovate più esclusive" del professore: gli Hobbit e gli Ent (prima di essere rinominati Halfling e Treant, per evitare problemi di copyright), che a differenza di elfi, nani, draghi, vampiri, eccetera, non esistono in nessuna mitologia classica.

Io Tom Bombadil e le sue canzonette li defenestrerei... senza Gygax il mondo sarebbe stato più triste e un po' di sana invidia competitiva si può perdonare a chiunque 😆, per come la vedo io.
